Mrs. Cubley

Although dealing with a different country (and continent) than those of our book, the people of Morocco share some similarities with those in Afghanistan and Pakistan. What similarities did you see? What differences?

Do you see yourself participating in a similar program (Peace Corps or other humanitarian group) in the future?

  1. Like in Afghanistan and Pakistan, the people of Morocco live a very simplistic life; the bare necessities. The houses look very similar, as did the food that they eat. The marriages are also arranged for the young girls, and some aspects of their clothing look the same as well.
Some of the differences are, that although they are not very wealthy, Morocco seems to have more of a peaceful society. Also women in Morocco don't have to hide their faces as they do in Afghanistan and Pakistan.
As for working in the Peace Corps, I think I would want to do something similar, but possibly not as far away; maybe in South America. I think it would be neat to learn another language and help people in a poorer country than ours.

  2. Like said in the discription of the question, the people who live in Morocco share some similarities with people who live in Afganistan and Pakistan. For example, these people bargain for food from the market and probably other supplies to, just like people in Afganistan and Pakistan. Similarly, they live in very small houses that are not in the best condition. Also, the women and men are kept seperate from each other, and when eating, they share a big bowl of food instead of getting your own. One of the differences that I saw was that there were cars in Morocco, and I know that in Afganistan and in Pakistan they have cars, but in the pictures fro the slide show, there were more high ways and more cars.

I personally would like to do a program like Peace Corps but not so soon. I think it is a great humanitarian grup but before I do something like that, I would like to get through collage and try to get a MD (Medical Degree).

  3. They have many similarities with eachother. The women in both cultures have to cover their head, both countries are generally poor countries, they both bargain for their living neccessities, the marriages in both cultures are arranged, and they both have generally poor living conditions. They have differences also. In Afghanistan/ Pakistan women are allowed to go to the market. In Morocco only the men go to the market.

I'm not sure whether I would want to join the Peace Corps. I would have to think about it a bit before I decided to do anything. I think it would be a really great experiance, but not until I graduate college.

  4. I thought that there were many similarities between Moroco and Afganistan and Pakistan. One example would be that people bargin for their food and other supplies at markets. Also that their marriages are arranged and they marry at a very young age.
I couldn't see myself working in the peace corps. Even though it would be amazing to visit al these other countries but I wouldn't want to leave my own and my family.

  5. Some of the similarities are that Morocco isn’t a wealthy country. And like people in Pakistan, before the right medicine came, there are diseases that could easily be treated by our medicines in the United States. I don’t really see myself participating in a similar program. Even though I support it and would willingly donate money to help, I am more interested in saving endangered species of animals.

  6. People of Morocco do share similarities with Afghanis and Pakistanis; one of the most obvious similarities is the wealth of the people. For the most part, people in Morocco are poor, just like people from Afghanistan and Pakistan. They live (like Julia said "with the bare necessities"). Even though there are allot of poor people in those countries the big cities are not too poor. Some other ways they are similar is their biome (which is quite similar to each others). The women are also not as important as the men. Some differences are the people. The languages are completely different. The women don't have to wear berka and hide themselves, except when they get married. Another similarity is when the people get married, it is arranged, and the couples don't see each other until marriage.

I would like to help people like this with problems; but I wouldn’t like to do these kinds of things, because I don’t like to travel.

  7. I would like to participate in the Peace Corps in the furture because I like travel and meeting new people and see what similars we have. I want to prove to myself I can face a new life and cultures. I want to learn, experiment, and face challenges in my life. To learn langauge that people don't know. See the world poor or not because knowing that we are not alone in this world and we can trust other religion and style of life. Prove that to make peace we have to understand each other. Like someone said "We can't shake hands with clutch fist." Another saying I like is " The world is like dominoes, But who going to start the one for peace for the world?"

  8. One similarity would be the limited amount of resources like food, doctors, and drinks. Another similarity would be the plant life and how little vegetation grows there. Also in both places girls are wed young and have an arranged marriage. The clothes they wear are similar in style also. The housing material is pretty much the same. Some differences between the two countries would be that women in Pakistan and Afghanistan have to wear scarves over their head in public unlike the women in Morocco. Another difference is that girls in Morocco are allowed to school till they are 12, while in Pakistan and Afghanistan, until recently, and are not allowed to go to school.
Even though I think it would be cool and interesting to travel to many different continents, I don’t see myself doing anything like that. I wouldn’t do that because I would be scared of people who don’t like Americas and are out to get them. Also I wouldn’t like having to live in some of the living conditions some countries have. Even though I wouldn’t want to participate in it I think it would be cool to learn the different languages and cultures.

  9. The people of Morocco and the people of Afghanistan and Pakistan are both simliar and different in many ways. They are similar in the way that their countries aren't very wealthy countries, but they all take strong pride in their religous beliefs. I think that the people in Morocco have a better developed school system than the people of Pakistan and Afghanistan.
I think that the Peace Corps is cool in the way that you can travel to different parts of the world. Some of the places that you travel to are beautiful in the way that the land is shaped. The place where may have to live isn't a five star hotel. You also may not agree with the way the government is run in the country that you stay in. In conclusion, I don't think the Peace Corps is for me.

  10. The people of Morocco do have some things in common with the people of Pakistan or Afghanistan. To exemplify this I could say that they all bargain for supplies they need instead of using money, something they don’t have being poor. Also they live in small, shabby houses, and women and men don’t mix and nobody gets their own dish, they all share when eating. The only difference I saw was that the people of Morocco had a lot more cars and highways than people in Pakistan or Afghanistan.

  11. The similarities that people in Morocco have with Afghanistan and Pakistan is their climate. It is mainly hot and dry. The houses in those countries look similar also. They use stone to build their houses a lot of the time. The age they are married is also a similarity. Some of the differences are they speak different languages. Another difference is people in Pakistan and Afghanistan has to wear a scarf over their heads.
I would like to do something like the Peace Corps in the future because I would love to go to another country and learn about their culture. I would probably want to go to a Spanish speaking country.

  12. Morocco, Afghanistan, and Pakistan have similarities. Women in all three areas have to cover their head or hair. The houses are made out of the resources they have in the region(Stones). All three countries aren't very wealthy. Girls in Morocco, Afghanistan, and Pakistan have arranged marriages to men they have never meet in their life. I would like to join the Peace Corps. Just to see the different cultures and landscapes and to hear the different languages would be interesting.

  13. There were many similarities to the people of Morroco and Pakistan/Afghanistan. Both places do not have alot of money. Also teir climate is very hot and dry in most spots. Their houses are also not very well build. Their also not well supported and they have little space. Many people share one bed.
I think it would be an amazing experience to be in the Peace Corps. It would give me an oppurtunity to do something different and help others in need outside of the U.S.

  14. Like Julia said some of the similarities are that they still do not have more than they need to survive. Some of the differences are that the women have more "freedom" in Morocco in the sense that they can go to school longer and do not cover their faces.

I can see myself participating in Peace Corps but I might get a little homesick being away that long. I think it would be fun to meet new people and see how I could help them.

  15. I could see myself participating in a similar program as (Peace Corps or other humanitarian group) in the future because i think it is important to help other communities, children and the poor because we should think of other people who need things more than we do and try and help them get things like homes, clothes, clean water, shoes, food, and many more things. We should think about these things instead of just wanting to make us happy with buying everything we want try buying something of old things that we don’t ware or use and give them way .

  16. some of the simialarities are that both have women wear a headdress-type-thing, and they also are in the middle-eastern area. some differents i saw are that Afghanistan and Pakistan build their houses out of rocks that have been stacked up and that Morocco builds their houses, essentially, out of mud.

I could see myself joining the peace corps because i love to travel and see sights. i am also interested in helping people that need it.

  17. there were many simularities between morocco and Afghanistan

  18. When we watched the slide show Mrs. Cubley presented, I thought we were watching a slideshow on Afghanistan and Pakistan. That was before I figured out Morocco was in Africa. Morocco is very similar to Afghanistan and Pakistan. The houses look a lot alike and some of the clothing is similar. The women of both Morocco and Afghanistan/Pakistan have to wear headscarves because of their religion. Differences were that even though the houses looked the same, they also had some differences. The houses in Morocco were poorer and the bathrooms weren’t very nice. Also Morocco is hotter than Afghanistan/Pakistan. In Pakistan the villages are very cold because they are in a mountain range. Morocco can be cold but from the slideshow it looked to me like it was very hot there.
I can’t see myself working in the Peace Corps. Because even though I would like to, I couldn’t stay away from my family that long. Mrs. Cubley said her daughter would be away for two years. To me that’s a long time to be away from family. I also am not very good at dealing with paperwork. With my luck I would lose half of it before I turned it in.

  19. In the slideshow about Morocco that Mrs. Cubley showed, some similarities between the three countries (Afghanistan/Pakistan and Morocco) were that in the pictures it appeared to that the plant life seemed very small in both countries. Also how much poverty there seemed to be, with the housing and people. Also in the countries they wore headscarves. Also both places seemed very dry. Working in the Peace Corps. Would be a great opportunity, it would be amazing to be able to work with others outside the United States and learning many other languages. But I cannot see myself working in this because of the living conditions and I would be scared of others trying to kill Americans. Also after a long period of time I would start to feel homesick.

  20. Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Morocco are all very poor countries. As Julia said, these countries barely survive, but with nothiing except bare necessities. Their clothing appears to be very similar to those in Pakistan and Afghanistan. The little food that they do get also seems close to those of Middle Eastern countries. Marriges are arranged for girls, but the bride and groom must not see each other until they are married. There are also some differences between Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Morocco. In Morocco, women are not prohibited to showing their faces in public, as they must in Afghanistan and Pakistan. If comparing Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Morocco, Morocco does not seem like a place of war, as Afghanistan has the Taliban.

I might be able to see myself working in the Peace Corps or something similar. I am learning Spanish, and would like to assist Spenish-speaking countries, because most are not surrounded with a great environment. However, I do have other hopes and goals for myself other than the Peace Corps.

  21. A similarities are the women wearing head scarves in public.

As for the peace corps, i think i will join in the future but i dont think i can see myself visiting a foreign country and speaking a different language.

  22. The people of Morocco share some similarities with those people in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Some of the similarities that they share are that the temperature there is very hot and humid. Also what they live in is the same because it’s small and falling apart. They are also very giving people although they don’t have a lot for themselves they give to people. The marriages are the same way and the food. Some differences are that the girls in Morocco don’t need to hide their face. But the people in Afghanistan and Pakistan do.

  23. I will address some of the similarities and differences about the very well put together power point that Mrs.Cubley put together. In morocco the plant life seemed to be smaller than what it is here in the United States. Also I saw much more poverty than in the United States. Also it was much fryer than it is here. Some similarities was that people there and here prayed.

  24. I noticed that both the People of Pakistan and Morocco live only with the bare minimum. They live in houses that are similiar and eat food that is similiar. The women are also forced into arranged marrianges. However the women are forced to cover up their hair and face.

I don't see my self doing something like the Peace Corps, unless I went to an English speaking country or region because I don't wanna learn another language.

  25. Some of the similarities is that like pakistan and Afghanistan, Marocco is a very poor place. They don't live greatly, and they are happy with it still. A difference is, in Morocco women have to wear something over their face, but in Afghanistan and Pakistan they don't have to.

I think it would be cool to work in something like that but it's to far away and it's not something i see myself working as in the future.

  26. I think it would be really cool to do peace corps. You would get to see the world and help other people at the same time. you could see amazing things, and really make a difference in someone's life. i think it would be really cool to join.

  27. I myself am extremely interested in the peace corps that would be something that I would deffinately join them because I would absolutely love to travel and join different customs.

  28. after reading three cups of tea and listening to Abid Amiri speak to us about his life in the middle east, i am inspired to begin helping people to live better lives. by donating money and participating in peace copr organizations me and others could make a difference in the world.

  29. I agree with Brooke, I absolutely love to travel and meet new people. So yes I am very interested.

  30. Some similarities are that people in Morocco pray and the people in Afghanistan and Pakistan pray too. Another similarity is that they both sometimes have low and high temperatures. Some differences are that they have different houses.

I could see myself participating in events like Peace Corps in the future. I would like to help these people out in these countries because they have a lot of poverty and I feel bad for them. Also that having a war going on it’s a very hard time to go through.

  31. Alot of the people from Afganistan and the Moroccan people dont live in luxury. They both have certain outfits that they havelike the head scharfs and the desses. I would like to do the Peace Corps because it is really interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe that they have some of the things we have but also in the other ways we don’t have the things that they have either.

Yes I believe that the peace corp. would be something I will be interested

  33. There are many similarities and differences between Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Morocco. One similarity is that they are all very poor countries. One difference is that the culture is different in the way that they dress.

I would not like to be in a peace corps because I already have a tough time learning Spanish in 2yrs so I don't think I could learn another language and pass that big test to see if you will stay or go.

  34. I saw many differences and similarities between our country and Pakistan’s and Afghanistan’s. I would say some differences are that they are poorer and not as well grounded as the United States. Also we have way better schools and are more fortunate, weather people realize it or not. But some similarities are that both countries are caring and try to help one another. The United States is trying to Pakistan and Afghanistan by building schools for them, not only the boys, but the girls as well. Pakistan and Afghanistan can’t really do much for us because they don’t have a lot, but when we sent troops there they open up their homes to them. There are also a lot of other ways the United States is similar and different from Pakistan and Afghanistan.
As for the Peace Corps, I think it’s really interesting. It would defiantly be cool to go around the world helping poor countries, and learning other languages and customs. But, I don’t think the Peace Corps is for me.
