  1. When the weather turns for the worst, the people of the village diside to go on a hunt for mountain goats. The people in the icolated village accually hunt for a majority of their meat they eat. Here most people just go to the supermarket and pick up a pound-or-two of hamberger meat and throw it on the grill. It takes days befor the hunters return with a fresh butchered goat meat. Mainly we pay other people to butcher and wrap the animals we sent them. The hunters will just take the badly ingured animal into a cave or set up camp and butcher the animal right then and there. The balti people take the skull of the goat with the horns still attached as we do with the common white-tailed deer.

  2. The hunt for the ibex is very difficult but, the horns and meat of the ibex are valued. After four days of searching an ibex herd is finally sighted. when crossing a dangerous glacier Twaha put on his tomar which is a symbol of courage. Baltis are given a tomar at birth and don't do anything dangerous without the tomar. When an ibex is finally in position to shoot Twaha takes out his single bullet and shoots. The only bullet shows the extreme poverty of the Balti people. After the ibex is killed it is skinned in a cave and the meat is divided among the hunters.

  3. Mortenson goes on a hunt with the people from Pakistan to find ibex, a type of mountain goat. The hunt reflected the values and traditions of the people of Korphe because it showed how patient they are. Patience can come in handy if you need to track an animal with just one bullet. It also shows how well the people of Korphe share. The hunters, after they have the meat, would split the meat and give a share to all of the families. The people of Korphe have learned how to work together with difficult tasks, like hunting the ibex for several days or the children going to school each morning.

  5. The hunt reflects the values and traditions of the Balti community because the Balti people are not the very wealthy like some people are here in America. So everything these people own is very valuable to them. For example hunts here in America last about a few hours to a day. But in places like the Balti community hunts can last up to about 4-5 days. This kind of thing has made the Balti people very patient not to waste anything they own because they might not get the chance for a very long time.

  6. In this chapter Greg Mortenson and Twaha go and hunt for the Ibex. This ritual is not only important for a food source but as a natural tradition for the people of Korphe. This ritual, in my opinion, tells of the great, rich culture and elegance that can be seen in small clusters....or pockets of Pakistan and Afghanistan that the news shows don't quite mention. From using the Tomar for courage, to praying for a shot to fell the Ibex, the Korphe show that they incorporate religious and traditional life into the most simple things such as hunting. But simple they are and they are also isolated which in some cases can be good. It makes them and their community more tranquil, beautiful, and peaceful. This chapter explains how they need the Ibex and how they respect it in mind, body, and heart. Sometimes you have to think, crazy as it is, if this is the more peaceful and correct way to play a part in existance.

  7. The hunt for Ibex really signifies the patients and will of the Pakistani people. They will wait for as long as they need so that their one bullet will hit their target. The fact that they only have one bullet, because they cannot afford proper hunting supplies shows how determined and poor these people are. They must carry their Tomars with them because, this will rid the hunters of evil spirits. This shows much currage, determination, and strength of the Pakistanis. This is so because they hunt for an animal that is skiddish, and survives on the top of mountains and glaciers. To the Pakistanis, the Ibex is a great treasure to all.

  8. The weather starts to get really bad but the villagers of Korphe neede meat. they decide to bring Greg along on a hunt for ibex. He couldn't believe how old the gun was and believed it should belong in a museum. The group had to sneak around a group of ibex without them smelling the hunters. Twice the group of ibex ran away because they caught a wiff of them. finally they snuck up on one very big bull and pushed up on the side of a cliff and the chief took a very lud shot. Greg thought that he missed but then the ibex's front leg buckled and Greg was amazed at the animal. This reflects the values and traditions of the village of Korphe because this is one of the few sources of meat and the horns of the ibex are just as equal in value to the meat of the ibex as believed by the Korphe villagers.

  9. Moreteson participates in an Ibex hunt up in the mountains. The hunt reflects the traditions because by reading this chapter you know how the people in the village aren't greedy they share. Also that they can split the meat between everybody not just that one person who shot the Ibex.

  11. The ibex is an immense mountain goat that is highly valued by the Balti people. The ibex skull is like an indescribable treasure to them. Also, the meat of the ibex, is possibly the most valued item in Korphe, just like the skull. The Korphe villagers sometimes use the only bullet in the village, that goes to an ancient looking gun, to hunt the ibex. The ibex hunt can sometimes last weeks on end because the Balti people use the only bullet in the village to hunt there animal god. They last up to weeks because the hunters make sure they are close enough to get a good shot on it.

  12. i agree with cassie brooks i do believe that the people in the lillage are not greedy and that they do share and that the food is all for one person and it was really hard becuse they only had one bullet to kill the animal with.

  13. Greg participated ona hunt for ibex. This reflects the values and traditions of the Balti people because it takes very much patience to hunt ibex. It took them nine days just to get one ibex. They also gave some of the meat to every person in the village. This shows that they work together to obtain their needs.

  15. The Hunt in which Greg participates in shows and reflects on how patience the Balti people are. It took them nine days just to kill one ibex. They waited and tracked the ibex that long because the ibex is very valuable to the Balti people. The killing of the ibex symbolizes tradition when Twaha and the hunters come back and share the ibex with the families of the hunters who participated in the hunt.

  16. I agree with what Sara said because the Balti have learned to become very patient and wait for the right moment so they don't waste their money and supplies because they aren't able to afford much.

  17. Mortenson participated in the hunt because he felt like he was one of the Korphe people. Since people of Korphe can't afford more than one bullet at a given time, they have to be very patient and very quiet. They value the ibex's horns and meat very much.

  18. I agree with Holly. The hunting of the ibex is a very difficult process for the Balti people, but also an expierence they honor, as the ibex meat and horns are very valuable. The hunt took the group 4 days, and while crossing the glacier it is custom for the Balti men to take out their tomar, a symbol of courage, which is given to them at birth. Finally, as they came in shooting range, they shot it with a rifle, which to Greg seemed ancient. They used a single bullet, which shows how poor they were. Then once the ibex was shot, they brought it to a cave, butchered it and distributed it amoung the familys. The hunters also handed out fat cubes from the ibex to the children to suck on, which is something you wouldn't see here in the US.

  19. Mortensen accompanies the men of Korphe on an Ibex hunt. An Ibex is a full grown male goat, that has horns that curl inward. These horns are very valueable to the people of Korphe; the horns can be worked to form necessary tools and utensils. The meat of the Ibex provides proper nourishment for the villagers, and the fat is sometimes handed out to the younger children. The children suck on the fat as if it were candy. The Balti people have traditions and values that differ from those of our country.

  20. i agree with nick because the tomar is something that they believe will give them good luck and they think that it will help them kill the ibex with only one bullet. It is tranquil, peaceful and religious. Oh and beautiful.

  21. He goes on the ibex hunt. I also agree with Holly. The hunting for the ibex is very hard and this shows they have to work very hard for what they need. They don't often get alot of meat so it was important that they shot this ibex. Once back they don't waste any of the animal. Even the little children suck on the fat like its candy. This shows how much they value just one animal they have killed.

  22. the hunt for the ibex is very treacherous and difficult. it may take 6 days until you have found one and to get in a good enough position to shoot it. but they also only have one bullet and a old gun. which kind of looks old fashioned. their meat is highly valued and every part of it they will use. and they never let it go to waste

  23. The hunt that Greg particapated in, was hunting a male Ibex. Greg hunted the Ibex with men from the village Korphe including Twaha. When hunting the Ibex one has to be very patiente because it may take days to even site one because they live so high up in the moutains in hgard to reach spots. After four days of hunting when Greg and the others would get into position where they could get a good shot they would always scare the herd. Finaly when Twaha had a shot at one he prayed to Allah before he shot his only bullet, and he hit the Ibex in the leg and killed it. What the hunt reflected on the values of the Balti people is that they have to work for there food insted of buying it they shoot it. Not many families have more than one bullet so if they missed the animal they will go hungry. The Ibex provided life for the Baltic because the Ibex could provide enough food for a family to survive.

  24. When Greg wants to build the school the chief says that they need a bridge first before they build a school .so when it starts raining really bad they men decides that they want to go hunting for an ibex. So they went on the hunt and they were tracking the ibex for about four or five days. When they shot it they spent the night in a cave cutting and skinning the animal. When they got back to the village they gave the children pieces of fat and they sucked on it like it was candy. This is a way to cherish every thing you have and when you get something don’t just use it once and then get rid of it.

  25. I agree with Murphy and Holly. The people in Korphe can't afford much, so they don't waste any part of the ibex.

  26. Greg went on a hunt for Ibex, this hunt sowed the determination and loyalty to their culture. They had to pass a very dangerous glacier and they valued it so much. I think it is very interesting on how they treasure such small things. In the U.S. something like this would never be treasured or valued like they value the Ibex.

    ReplyDelete
  27. The Hunt that Gred goes on really represents the differences between our cultures. We as Americans take everything for granted and the people of Korphe use every part of the Ibex being sure to get everything that they possibly can out of the goat. The people of Korphe have one shot and one shot alone to supply their village with food and it may take days to track down an ibex worthy enough of the only bullet that the villagers can afford.

    ReplyDelete
  28. The hunt that Greg participated in was to go hunting for the ibex. He learned that he had to be patient before shooting. They only had one bullet. They had to be close up to the edge so that the ibex don’t smell their scent. They followed the rules and laws that are in Korphe. Greg had to be patient and calm while they were building the bridge and Haji Ali told him to sit down and have a cup of tea.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I agree with Holly when she talks about the single bullet and how that one bullet proves and shows the extreme poverty that these people have to live in. Also, when they go hunting for the ibex it is so valuable and you see that in this story when the men keep hunting. They do not stop until they have an ibex skinned and the meat is cut and brought back to the village. This also shows the extreme determination of these hunters. Another point is in the story when Twaha takes out his tomar. In the novel it said that no one ever did anything dangerous without his or her tomar. This shows one of the many Balti cultures and traditions that are always followed. As Holly said every person is given a tomar at birth and they keep it for the rest of their lives.

  31. The hunt that he went on was the hunt for the Ibex. I think that they had great determination finding the Ibex goat. I think it is important to have traditions, and values. This really shows why Greg really likes the Balti people, because they are determined.

  32. The hunt shows the Balti culture in this way.For example, it took the hunters and Greg a very long time to try to hunt the Ibex. It took more then a week, and unfortunately the people of Korphe that had gone hunting at this time had only brought one bullet to hunt with. This shows that they are paistaint people. So as you can see the people of this villege honor the ibex in many ways by keeping the horns of the ibex with honor. Lastly the people who had gone hunting shared the meat of the Ibex with the whole village this shows that the people of Korphe are not selfish at all.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with Hilary and holly .The single bullet the people of the village hunt with symbolizes the poverty stricken area. When the men go hunting they also just keep looking until they find one. This also shows just how determined these people really are. This shows how prized the meat is to their village. Traditions are always followed. When any Balti member does anything dangerous they always put on the tomar.

  34. Greg goes on a hunt for the ibex with the Balti people. The ibex is very precious to the Balti people; they treasure the meat and horns. Greg and the people of Korphe hunted for four days until they finally shot the ibex, they only had one bullet and Twaha was successful in shooting the ibex. The one bullet represents their wealth and it shows how poor they really are. Many hunters in America can afford to make many shots and spend more money where as the Balti only have one shot, and are very deprived of money. Before going to kill the ibex they approach the herd very carefully and the Balti are very careful not to make any noise or sudden movements so Twaha can kill the ibex on his first and only try. On the passage they cross a treacherous glacier and Twaha takes out his tomar and ties it on Greg’s zipper on his jacket. The tomar is a symbol of courage and is given to the Balti people at birth. The tomar helps keep the Balti safe. After the difficult journey they divide the meat amongst the hunters and they carry it back to the village, the frozen fat pieces are given tot the children like candy. Which is one of their traditions.

  35. When the weather turns for the worst, the people of the village divide to go on a hunt for mountain goats. The people in the isolated village actually hunt for a majority of their meat they eat. Here most people just go to the supermarket and pick up a pound-for-two of hamburger meat and throw it on the grill. Witch I think is very wrong for people to just do that they should appreciate what they are given and not just waste it

  36. I agree with Katie that we the hunt takes great deterination and the ibex is well valued. None the ibex is wasted ethier. Kind of like the Native Americans and the buffalo every single part is used. In the U.S. we tend to waste a lot more, getting meat requires a lot less work too; all we have to do is walk into Super Wal-Mart and buy some pre-packaged and cut meat, then cook it on a stove.

  37. While the people of Korphe were waiting for the storm to blow over, they went on an Ibex hunt (a kind of mountain goat). The first Ibex Twaha spotted, after 4 days of hunting, ran away before Twaha got a good shot at it. During their hunting they stumbled upon a glacier. Twaha pulled out a Tomar, a good luck medallion, and gave it to Mortenson. This hunt that Twaha went on reflected on the Balti community traditions because the Balti were obviously taught to be generous and giving.

  38. I agree with Devin. The hunt that Greg went on with the Balti people took a couple days just so they could get a close enough shot at it. This shows that he is determined to complete the school for the Balti people.

  39. I agree with Devin. The Balti people do have alot of determination to track down the ibex for days on end, and it is important have traditions and values.

  40. Greg went on a hunt to go get ibex because ibex is a big mammal for meat for the people

  41. The hunt that Mortensen goes on is for Ibex, a type of mountain goat in Pakistan. The meat is valued just like Holly said because they use every piece they can get their hands on. They give the children cubes of Ibex fat because the children consider it a treat. In America we usually don’t eat the fat. If you went on the hunt for the Ibex then if one gets killed you get some of the meat from the Ibex. They also had to put on the tomar before they killed the Ibex.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Their hunt for Ibex is very important to Balti without the hunt families would start to stave and people would start to die. They usually take four or more days to even kill an Ibex. This means that they are really good at waiting for the animal they don’t rush things along. They share the meat they get with everyone in their village; everyone gets to take some meat home with them to feed their families. The fat on the meat is usually given to the children for treats. Balti also treasures the meat and horns of the Ibex.

    ReplyDelete
  43. The balti people’s hunt for the ibex was a great deal for their society. The balti people really need that meat from the ibex. I agree with Sammie, because without all the meat they are getting from the ibex, they would die because they wouldn’t really have much food to depend on.

  45. The people of this town go out on many day trips just tracking an ibex that they may not even kill. It takes so long because these people have to makes sure they get a good shot because they can only afford one bullet to kill the animal. The shot must be perfect for them to risk it. This hunt shows that the Balti community is very consevative and tries to use their resources very wisely. Also, they just must be patient to make sure that they acctually kill the ibex. I also agree with Katelynn that the ibex is a big deal for that Balti people.

  46. While Greg was staying in Korphe, he was taken on a hunt of the ibex. The ibex is very important to the Balti community. Ibex are very agile and the hunters must be quick, or they may not kill the ibex. When an ibex is spotted, the hunter must stay very quiet and very still in order to get close enough to “waste their only bullet”. The hunter wants to make sure the shot is accurate so they may sit still for a very long time. Greg was surprised to see how quiet the hunters were and how long they sat still for. But he also saw how it was worth the wait. One hunter shot an ibex. The ibex was shared among the entire community, and the fat was given to the children to suck on. The ibex being shared throughout the whole community makes you realize how rare and exciting a successful ibex hunt is. It makes you realize that ibex are very valuable to the community.

  47. The people of Korphe went to find an ibex for their village. It takes many days to find and kill an ibex because they have to get close enough to it. To kill this ibex they used only one bullet and were very careful not to miss the shot. The men go out all together and hunt. The horns and meat of the ibex a cherished among the villagers. The fat of the ibex is even given to children to suck on like candy. The shooting of the ibex was successful. This was so important for the Balti people.
This is very different from American customs. In America people hunt for a sport more than survival. An ibex is one of the things they eat to survive and have something in the stomachs until they can eat again. This is one thing that we are lucky to have, natural resources.

  48. Greg participated on a hunt for the ibex. This is a tradition for the Balti people and which it takes patience to hunt for the ibex. It took nine days to kill the ibex. They also gave meat to every person in the village. They worked together to show there needs.

  50. The tradition is reflected from the hunt because it is common for the man holding the gun to use one bullet and it also shows that they used patience to track the ibex and they share the meat that they get with the rest of the people in the village.

  51. Greg and some of the men from Krophe went to hunt Ibex (which is a type of mountain goat with big twisted horns), which are very special to the Korphe people. The horns are a prize position, and the meat is extremely valuable. Hunting ibex has been a tradition of the people of Korphe or a very long time. It shows quite a few values. The men have to have patience, it took those 4 days to find an ibex; they had to use their resources wisely (they only had one bullet, so they had to make the shot count) and the men are also very sharing (even though ibex meat is very special, the men distributed the meat around to other people and gave the horns to Greg). That hunt symbolizes how good the people of Korphe really were.

  52. When Abdul Shah says “By the merciful light of Allah, tomorrow we make much bargain”, I guess he is saying if Allah is merciful enough, they will be able to trade or bargain for the goods the next day. The mentioning of Allah in that phrase says allot to me. It shows me that Allah and the Muslim religion is important to Abdul Shah, and his culture. Some Muslims pray up to 5 times a day, that’s dedication to their religion. Bargaining is haggling with the sales person of a thing which eventually comes to an agreement (normally at a lower cost than at the start). It shows me how different our cultures are. In American we would never bargain, but you would be foolish not to if you lived in the Middle East.

  54. The hunt is when the men of Korphe go on an Ibex hunt. The Ibex is a very rare meat to the village and well meat in general is very rare. The men only have one gun and one shot to kill the large beast. It is very different from our own culture because we are use to just going to the store and buying what we want when its all packaged up. They have to go on an about 4 day hunt just to kill one animal and even then they have to cut it up and carry it all they way back to the village. Just them.

  55. I agree with Holly. The hunt for the ibex is very difficult but, the horns and meat of the ibex are highly valued among the people. During the hunt, they have to hunt for four days. After four days of searching an ibex herd is finally sighted. When crossing a dangerous glacier, Twaha put on his tomar which is a symbol of courage. Baltis are given a tomar at birth and don't do anything dangerous without the tomar. When an ibex is finally in position to shoot, Twaha takes out his single bullet and shoots. While getting ready to shoot, Twaha is saying a prayer as thanks for the ibex. Since Twaha had only one bullet shows the extreme poverty of the Balti people. 56. The Balti people really value the ibex and use every part of it, they also only have one gun and one bullet to kill it. Most americans hunting deer have many bullets that if they missed they could just reload. Also we dont use evry part of something we kill like the Balti would. So i think that we really take our way of life for granted.

  57. The hunt that Greg Mortenson went on with Twaha, it took four days just to find one ibex. While they were crossing a very dangerous glacier, Twaha put on his tomar which is a symbol of courage that Balti's are given at birth. When he is able to shoot it, Twaha takes out his only bullet and shoots the ibex. While he's getting in position to shoot, he prays thanks for the ibex which is valued in the Balti community. This hunt reflects that the village is very poor since they could only take one bullet with them on the hunt. Also, it shows that it is a very valued animal because the children sucked on the meat as if it was candy, and the men ate the meat in a cave after killing it.

  58. I think the hunt is a traditional way for the balti people to learn to be patient, because Twaha was only allowed to use one bullet to kill the ibex and he had to be patient to get a good open shot. Also this chapter shows how the balti people are thankful for what little they have because after the ibex is killed he is skinned in a cave and divided among the hunters
