  1. Mortensen discovers that in Korphe, the people didn't have a proper doctor. The nearest one lived a week’s walk away. The people don't have the medicine that people in the U.S. have. Mortensen also discovers that there isn't a school building. And the children of Korphe only have a teacher three times a week. The quality of life is worse than my own because children in Pakistan don't get the schooling they should have. And girls who go to school are discriminated against. In the U.S., girls aren’t discriminated against and everyone goes to school. Also most children suffer from malnutrition, in the U.S., there is more than enough food.

  2. The people of Pakistan definitely lead a much less hectic life than we do in the U.S. The children sat in the dirt and educated themselves without a teacher's guidance. I don't think many kids today could even do that much. Also the Pakistanis also believe that sugar is precious; something that we would never think about. Their helthcare system was very poor as well, but in some ways their lives seem more peaceful, from the descriptions in the book and the movies.

  3. Mortensen discovers that in Korphe people are sick with diseases that in the U.S. could be cured easily. Also that the education was bad even though kids were learning something it wasn't a proper education. These children didn't even have a teacher or a proper desk to sit at when the learned there lesson for the day.If conditions were like that in the U.S. kids today wouldn't even bother to go to school.

  4. Mortensen discovers that he had taken his cushy life for granted. Not everyone is lucky enough to have exceptional health and education. Mortensen was and is capable of affording education and health care for his two children; he finds that people are struggling to survive in the middle east. The life of these suffering people is far worse than the life I am currently living; my parents have well-paying jobs that can help pay for food, education, clothing, and medication. It is horrifying to learn of the malnourishment, poor education, and inability to pay for necessary items in this area of the world.

  5. Mortensen discovered many thing in Korphe. Some sad and some amazing. He discovers that Korphe doesn't even have a village doctor. Many of the children are suffering from malnutrition and they don't have any medicine to help cure it. Another amazing discovery he made was the school or no school. Many of the kids would go to school without a teacher, because all they want to do is be educated. So many people and kids in America complain about having to go to school. I think we need to think more of how thankful we should be for getting such an amazing education. I think my quality of life is better than theirs. I have enough food and get a good education.

  6. While in Korphe, Mortensen discovers that the children do not recieve the proper health care and schooling. They did not have much of a doctor because he lived a week's walk away. Also, Korphe did not have the needed medications sor the ill. Mortensen also discovers that the children did not recieve adequate schooling. He noticed that the children were writing in the dirt with sticks, practicing their times tables. The village of Korphe could not afford the cost for the teacher (one dollar per week), so Korphe shared the teacher with another village, recieving only three days of schooling per week. On top of that, the children were schooled outside because there was not a building specifically for schooling. The quality of life is better and worse than my own. It is better because since the village does not have the funds to support education, it brings the children together to really pay attention and work with each other. It is worse because of the seventy-two children that went to school, few were girls.

  7. The quality of life in Korphe is worse than in the United States. Greg Mortensen discovered that the people of Korphe had no doctor, and that the nearest one was a week's walk away. The people of korphe also do not have proper schooling because a teacher only comes 3 days out of the week. The rest of the week the children write and do their lessons with sticks in the sand. Also, not many girls go to school in Korphe. That is different in the U.S. because every boy and girl sre required to go to school. Compared to Korphe, The United States is the better place to live.

  8. I agree with Theresa. The people in the village of Korphe need a real doctor that doesnt live a weeks walk away. Also the children in this village need a real teacher that can be there everyday not half of the time. THe children also need real school buildings not having to sit on the ground!!!

  9. Mortensen discovers many things about the people in Korphe. He discovered how bad the conditions were in terms of health care. With a doctor a weeks walk away, and very expensive, the people of Korphe couldnt afford medical care. Which leads to deaths and illness. He also discovered the lack of education the children were recieving. The kids were practicing problems in the dirt with sticks from lessons they get from a teacher once a week.

The quality of life in Korphe is much worse compared to mine. I am lucky to live in the United States were this is proper education so i can find a job and support myself. Im also lucky to have proper healthcare. There are a few things i think my life lacks that the people of Korphe have, and that is when they took mortenson in, a stranger. When Mortenson went to the small village, he was very different, and weak- but they treated him very respectively and gave him there best. That is something I probably would have never done.

  11. I agree with Julia B.'s post because the children today couldn't sit in the dirt writing out lessons without supervision. Most children in the United States couldn't sit in the dirt without throwing it at other children or possibly eating it. Young children would get distracted very easily and wouldn't be able to concentrate. The children of Pakistan have a higher attention span than most American children.

  12. i agree with serena. children shouldnt have to have thier teacher living a weeks walk away. and so that is not the case, the teacher should live their. or if that is not possible then they could at least live closer to the village. i also think that poeple should worry about others that do not have the things that we have in the u.s. peopla all over should be halping this program. not just children. grownups out of all poeple should understand that these are children. and if the kids there were thier sons and daughters, they would help them go to school and get a education. the children in pakistan are willing to learn and go to school because they want to and are willing to put fourth the effort to succeed in life.

  13. Yeah, Theresa I agree but I think that there is some malnutrition also in the United States. Their quality of life may be poor, but they have each other. The way they write in the sand when the teacher is not present, and how they try to teach themselves is amazing. Most children in the U.S. would not teach themselves if they had no teacher. The girls who go to school are brave because as you said, Theresa, they get discriminated against, picked on and called names. I hope pennies for peace improves they quality of life for these children.

  15. I agree with Allyssa Hampson because the life in Korphe is not as easy as life here in the United States. We grow up and die, we learn and we lose, but we still take everything for granted. We think of sugar as a cheap item that doesn't matter, but to them, it can be the most expensive item available. Allyssa also makes a good point that they had no doctor or health care, and the town teacher cost too much and only came for about 3 days a week.

  16. there health care is poor but the eat what they can kill or catch or grow so you can say they survive.

  17. Greg Mortenson finds out that the people in Korphe don't have good healthcare and education. They don't have schools to learn in and can't afford a teacher or the supplies needed to learn. They also don't have hospitals or good doctors. The lifestyle in Korphe is worse than my life because I have the ability to go to school in a building with good teachers and the money to buy the supplies I need. Also, I have a hospital and good doctors available for me, unlike the people of Korphe.

    ReplyDelete
  18. There was not enough money to build a school and pay a teacher plus supplies. The people can not afford a doctor for there village. One out of three die before theirfirst birthday. It is different for we americans. The children in the Korphe can not have vaccination shots.

    ReplyDelete
  19. He dicovered that the kids did not have any education or very good transportation because it took at least a week to get to a doctor. 1 out of 3 kids die before the age one. In Canton for an example the 4 year olds can come to school for free. You also have better tranportaion to get you to a doctor for shots before school.

  20. I Agree with Becky because thet did get diseases very fast. Their education is not very go either because they dont have any school . Girls can only go to school so any hours then they have to go home.I also think that their lives are wrose than ours Because we have schools, more food and and better home conditions .

  21. Mortensen discovers that the healthcare of the people or korphe is extremely poor and their education is horrible because the dont even have a school

  22. Mortenson discovers than in Korphe, their quality of life is very poor compared to that of
Americans. He finds out that they get diseases fast, and one out of every three babies a year die. Also, to learn, half of the week they don't have a teacher, evry single day they sit on the ground, and to write they use sticks and mud, very few actually have slates. American life is so much better because we have a lot of schools, some kind of close together, and we have money to buy extras while they can only buy what they need.

  23. I agree with trevor the medical care that we have here is much better then what they have in their village.

  24. The small village of Korphe doesn’t have its own doctor and the closest one live a week’s walk away, so if someone was injured then they might not live. Also the school teacher cost $1 a week and the people of Korphe could not afford that so they shared the teacher with a neighboring village. The village does not have a school building and they lessons are either scratched in the sand or written with mud on a piece of slate. Girls are discriminated against going to school to learn. The village of Korphe had not had a school for 600 years and if it weren’t for Greg Mortensen they probably still would not have a school. In the United States children of every religion , race, and gender are allowed in the public school and everyone is welcome to go to college. Most of the U.S. schools are paid by the government and tax dollars so they are in pretty good shape and not run down. Also there are many hospitals in the U.S. and people can get health insurance to keep their medical expenses down. If you show up to a hospital injured they won’t ask questions they will help you.

  27. Greg Mortenson learns that the people in Korphe have very poor healthcare and education. They don't have schools to learn in and can't afford a teacher or the supplies needed to learn. They learn outside in the dirt and they use a stick to write with. They also don't have hospitals or good doctors. The lifestyle in Korphe is worse than my life because I have a school to go to and I have really good healthcare that is there for me. Also, I have food to eat every night & a house to live in.

  28. What Greg Mortensen discovered about the quality of life in Korphe, specifically in regard to healthcare and education was that Korphe or many other towns in Pakistan many children had uclean life. When Greg arrived in korphe he learnd that the children didnt have any schools, so they would have to work in the dirt outside. The town was so poor that they could barely afford a teacher. Greg discovered that the only health care that they had was from herbs. Many of the children would die of diseases before they were two or three.

  29. Greg Mortensen discovers that the quality in life in Korphe is that the children don’t get as good as an education as we do in the United States. Girls aren’t even allowed to go to school in Pakistan. The teacher would be in a town for three days and then have to leave to teach somewhere else. The children would do their school work with sticks in the dirt. I know that if we didn’t have a teacher for school in America, we probably would just be hanging out with our friends and not taking the time to learn by ourselves. I also agree with Katie that we should be thankful that we are getting an education. The children in Korphe suffer from malnutrition because there isn’t a lot of food to feed to them. They don’t have a doctor either that is right there in the village. I think their quality of life is worse than ours in the United States.

  30. Greg Mortensen discovers that the quality in life in Korphe is that the chrildren don't get as an good education as we do in the united states. Girls arent even allowed to go to school in Pakistan. The people in Pakistan they only have enough money to keep the teacher in town for three days.

  31. He learned that Korphe could survive on there way for life now, but they will need more to live in the future years. They will need education, which they have now but is very limited. Plus, they will need health care so if a disease hits it will not wipe out everybody. Since they helped Greg, Greg was going to help them by building a school.

  32. I agree with Trevor when he says there life is a lot worse than life here in America. We are so use to getting what we want when we want it. We take school for granted and they cherish it like it was some type of ancient candy or something. There education is much worse than ours. Their lesson plans consist of them drawing in the sand with sticks.

  33. I agree with almost every one who posted so far. We are very fortunate that we get all of these things with easy access. Edjucation here in the U.S. is very important but even more so in Korphe. Here, everyone gets an edjucations whether you are poor or rich, healthy or sick, boy or girl.

  34. Life is Alot different in Korphe than in the United States. the People of Korphe are delvloped enough to where they can survive, but they don't have a strong education and stable medical treatment. In the U.s. we can go to a public school and pick-up medicine at the drug store to cure the common. In Kopohe they don't have the the great things we have, they don't have a school and the closest vilage may 2 hours away.

  35. Mortenson realized that the quality of life in Korphe was very poor and needed some help. In Korphe there are no doctors. If someone were to get sick or hurt they would most likely not make it. They also don't have medicine to cure sicknesses. The education is not very good either. Teachers only come limited days during the week and leave lessons for the kids to work on while they are gone. The people cannot afford to pay the teachers the $1 salary. When the teachers are not there the children sit in the dirt with no adult and teach themselves the lessons using a stick to write in the dirt. Girls are not allowed to get an education instead are expected to learn housework. Girls who do receive an education are frowned upon.

  36. Greg Mortenson discovers that the life in Korphe is hard for the kid's because they have to Wright with sticks in the sand and they do not have a proper school or learning system, and he realized that the children of Korphe needed a good school, because they all deserve a proper school and a good learning system just as much as we do.

  37. Mortenson discovered that the quality of life in Korphe was poor and uneducated, none of the children had very much education and they sat in the dirt and wrote multiplication facts in the dirt with out a teacher this showed that they very much wanted to learn but had no place to do it, or a teacher to show them. If students here in the United States were left alone we would not keep working, but talk to each other instead. They don’t have much healthcare and die from the flu or something that would be nothing to us is a tragedy in Pakistan. With just the simplest antibiotics we could cure a injury or illness but without these many Pakistan people die, the closest doctor to Korphe lives a week’s walk away. They also never got quite enough to eat and some suffered from malnutrition.

  38. I agree with Theresa. It's way different in Korpe. They don't have as much, and they have to suffer. They live worse then my lifestyle because i have school until college and i can be any age. Also, if I need medicine or something else I can get it a little easier.

  39. Greg Mortenson discovered that health care is very poor in Pakistan because they don't have a village doctor. So if someone gets hurt or sick the have to live trough it and hope it will get better. Not having a village doctor could be because of the poor education. Nobody has the chance to get an education to become a doctor. Nobody is even able to go to another village to go to school because women weren't expected to go to school and men had to help take care of a farm and make a living the only way they new how.
The quality of life that the people had was so much better than some Americans and amazing compared to what they had in life. So, I would say that there quality of life is better than Americans. There way of life seemed laid back and always wanting peace and they accept that they don't have a doctor or education because they didn't know to think any other way. Then Greg came along and told them that there are better things out there and that if he could raise money he would make there life better. So, he built a school.

  40. I agree with Morgan and Theresa. The children in Korphe need a real simple education that can follow them through so they can get good jobs outside of their village.

  41. When Mortensen stumbled into Korphe, he noticed the people there were very poor, and had very few thing worth much here (the quality was bad). They let him use the best stuff they had, which was still pathetic. In regards to the health care and education, it was extremely bad. The people of Korphe didn't have a doctor; hence there were quite a few deaths among the children (from diseases). The biggest thing for this book though was the school. Greg noticed when he would go outside; the children would be trying to learn by themselves (with no teacher). The teacher which would teach them was too expensive, so they took turns with neighboring villages, and was not there. The children were writing on slates with mud and sticks! The qualities there are much worse than where I live; I wouldn't want to live there. Here in America there are very few deaths from disease, due to hospitals and doctors that are ready to help around the clock; and all children (no matter the sex) has to get an education.

  43. The education in Korphe wasnt as good and there are pros and cons of living there. The pros of living in Korphe is that living there you learn to survive on your own. So when/if you do leave the village then you would know exactly what to do in any situation. It has its own life lesson living there. The cons of living in Korphe is that there was no school for centuries untill Greg built one. And they have to medical treatment what so ever. Many people in the village died. It was a very poor village so they didnt have any running water. But once Greg built their school and when the first child was education they passed on their education to help the whole village. so in the end education benifetted everyone.
