  1. There are three very important actions taken by Greg Mortenson was making 580 letters to famous people and rich people. Although he only recieved 1 check for 100 dollars back from a news anchor. Although this happened he didn't give up raising money, which itself is another action he took that reveals his character. Last but definitley not least he sold almost everytihng he had including the car he slept for a flight ticke to pakastan where he helped bargain for suppleiis to build schools. I would describe Mortenson as extremely generous.

  2. Greg spent everything he had and typed 580 letters to people and out of the 580 letters he only recieved 1 from Tom B (a news anchor) with it thier was $100. out of all of that work he only got 1 reply so I think he is dedicated. Also he was loyal because he promised to build a school and now he is going to build it for the people of Korphe. Lastly he is admirable because he is spending he life to help the unfortunate people of Korphe.

  3. Greg spent everything he had to get money to build schools in Korpe. He sent 580 e-mails and only one person responded. It was a news anchor and in it was 100$. I think he is commited because of that. I agree with Mikhail that he is loyal because he promised the people of Korphe to bulid schools and he was trying to get the money. Lastly he is very nice for giving up most of his things for them.

  4. Three very important actions taken by Greg would help put money toward educating girls. One, he wrote 580 letters to famous people for money to this charity. He only got one letter back from a news anchor. The second thing was that he was loyal. He told the people of Korphe he would build a school for children. And thirdly he sold most of his belongings and slept in his car so he would have enough money for materials to build the school.

  5. I think that Greg is very determained. This is a great adjective to use to descibe him because he sold everything he had to raise money for the school he wants to build in Korpe. He sent out 580 emails to poeple that he thought might help him raise money. He talked to Westside Elementary School in River Falls where his mother is the principle. The school raise as much money as they posibley could to help build this new school.

  6. Greg Mortenson is determined. he only got 1 reply from 580 letters. But that didn't stop him from trying to raise the money. He ended up selling many of his personal items to get enough money for his project. Mortenson is also loyal. He kept his promise to go back to Pakistan and build a school for the people of Korphe.

  7. Three actions Mortenson took that revealed his character was taking the time to write 580 letters to try and raise money for the schools. Also selling some of his own treasures like his climbing books and risking his life on a very dangerous road to get the supplies needed to build the school to the location. The word that describes Greg is dedicated and determined to get what he wants.

  8. i agree with Mikhail, i think he is loyal, dedicated and admirable because he did write so many letters and only got one response. he is putting his life into the lives of others, to look after them and build so many schools for them. he really helped save the poor lives of the children of korphe.

  9. There are many people to agree with in this discussion, because they all explain the character that Greg Mortenson has shown to us all through this book. I mostly agree with Alex, Mikhail, and Hudson for there use of explaining the character in the times of trouble. (Having trouble getting help from the celebreties, doing anything possible such as selling his belongings.) In this chapter more than any other Greg Mortenson defines his purpose to help those children in Korphe, no matter what the cost. That shows real character.

  10. i agree with sammie that determind was a great ajective to discribe Greg because he help try to rais money so he can build a school for all those children so they could learn and he also got his mother that was the principle of another school helped rais money too

  11. I agree with Abby. Greg is very determined. Even though it took him awhile to raise money and get supplies, he stayed loyal to keeping his promise to build a school for the Korphe
children. Also Greg is very outgoing, he did everything and anything he could, and with that said I think I could describe him as very intelligent, admirable, and dear.

  12. Greg Mortenson shows his some of his character in these few chapters by talking in the book about what he had to do to help. First of all, even trying to help is a huge step. But another huge one is to even take the time out of a normal day, to write five hundred and eighty letters to people with money that might actually have noticed enough to send him financial aid to build a school. Another huge factor of character is even though he received only one check in return, and it was only worth one hundred dollars, that did not slow down his momentum. Greg began to sell almost all of his belongings in order raise enough money for a school. But his determination and hard work led him to victory, and he raised enough money for a whole school. One adjective to some up this brilliant fellow, I believe, would be either charitable or honorable.

  13. Mortenson's character is shown in these chapters because he took time out of his life to write 580 letters and only got one response. This shows that he is dedicated, determined and loyal. He made a promise to the children in Korphe and he is going to keep it, even though it meant selling almost all of his belongings to get enough money for it.

  14. I agree with Jamie that Mortenson is dedicated and determined to the children in Korphe. Plus that he risked his life for them on a very dangerous road to get the supplies to Korphe.

  15. Greg Mortenson spent a lot of time typing letters on a type writer so he could get money to build a school in Korphe. He also sold everything he had including his car so he could get more money. He also talked to kids about building the school, and why he was doing it. all these things show that Greg Mortenson is determined to build a school for Korphe.

    ReplyDelete
  16. I agree with Mikhail and Hudson that Mortenson was dedicated to the Korphe people. He typed and sent 580 letters to people well known in America and despite only getting one check for $100 he didn't stop trying. He sold almost everything he had and lived as cheap as possible. He kept his promise and raised just enough money to get materials and get back to Korphe.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Greg is very determined. He would have typed 580 letters all on a typewriter and send them to famous figures in American society. Greg is also ready to give up anything to help build a school. He sold all of his material possesions to help pay for the trip to Korphe.

    ReplyDelete
  18. One adjective describing Greg Mortenson would be determined. Before he could start building the school he had to get money for the building supplies. So he started typing letters one by one on a typewriter. Then a man from Pakistan working in a computer store showed him how to use a computer and type the letter only once and send it to numerous people. He sent the letter to people he thought had enough money to spare some and donate to his cause. With the help of this man he sent 580 letters to people across the country. Although he only made $100 from these letters he did not give up which in turn shows another part of his character. When he got to Pakistan Greg was pressured by different towns to build the school in that town instead of in Korphe. By refusing all of these struggles he showed that he also has integrity and honesty to the people of Korphe.

  19. Greg Mortenson in one word: DETERMINED. Only someone as dedicated to a goal as Mr. Mortenson would go to the lengths he went to. His obvious dedication to his project, as well as his personal sacrifices, make you stop and think. It is people like Mr. Mortenson who change the world; those individuals who are willing to give everything they have to change things. He tried as hard as he could to spread the message. He typed letters, and then, through the kindness of a stranger, he used a computer to process the letters faster. After an article concerning his quest was published in a magazine, an interested millionare gave him the remaining funds that he needed. Eventually he was driven to sell the car that he had been living out of for air fare. Mr. Mortenson certainly has the dedication it takes to make a difference.

  20. I agree with Abby and Sammie when they said that Greg Mortenson was determined. With almost everything he does he shows his determination. When he started writing the letters and had to type them one by one that showed his determination. He also showed it when he was asked to build his school in other towns but kept denying this request so he could build it in Korphe. Another example of his determination was when he sold almost all of his belongings to pay for the building supplies.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Throughout the three chapters, Mortensen's actions really accentuated his character. He sacrificed much time, money and will. He wrote 580 letters to celebrities on the computer- a piece of technology he had never used before. Mortensen also sold most, almost all of his belongings, although he was dressed in old, torn clothing. Finally, Mortensen sacrificed his life on roads that could have possibly killed him; just because he wanted the supplies to make it to Korphe. If i could sum up Greg Mortensen with one word, it would be dedicated.

  22. You can tell in these chapters that Greg is very determined. Mistake after mistake he continued to write letters out on a typewriter. After getting only one letter back he still didn't loose hope. He started to sell his own belongings to make some money. Then he still had to make it all the way back to Korphe to keep his promise.

  23. I agree with everyone who said he is determined because i can't think of a better way to describe him. Greg sold almost everything he owned for money towards the shcool he wanted to build in the village of Korphe. The when he finally got all of his money he traveled back to Pakistan and tried to get back to the village of Korphe. But he ended up in a different village. The villagers there got confused and decided that he was to build the school there. Greg finally got aggravated and refused to talk to anyone until he was taken to the village of Korphe because that was where he would build the school.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I think Greg is very determined this is great evedence becouse he sold everthing he owned so he could have money for his trip to go back to packistan and money for the school.

  25. I agree with what Taylor said about Greg being loyal because if he wasn't he wouldn't have taken the time to type 580 letters to get money for the schools.

  26. In chapters 4-6 Greg had took many important actions. One of the actions Greg took would be when he wrote 580 letters to people to inform them and ask them for donations towards the school he built in Korphe. Another action Greg took in these chapters is he sold everything he owns including his car to get enough money to travel there. Last but not least he bought the supplies needed to build the school. Some things he bought would be cement, lumber, nails, shovels, and saws. These actions show that Greg is very loyal and commited to the promice he made to the people in korphe.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I think that he was very determined to build the school in korphe and all the other towns wanted to have him build it in their town for their people. The reason why he wanted to build the school in korphe is because when he got lost on the mountain of K2 the people in korphe helped in all the ways they could to make sure he was going to get rid of his sickness. Also the reason why he is determined is that he was going to write 580 letters to the most famous people he could think of so he go get his message out.

  28. -loyalfor typing all the letters
-selling every thing he hs=ad owned
-wanting to bild all the schools for all the kids

  29. Greg Mortenson promised the village of Korphe a school, and so he dedicated his life to building it until he finished. Greg Mortenson went through great troubles to get the money and supplies for the school. He hand typed each of the 580 letters to famous and rich people, such as Michael Jordan (MJ!) and Oprah Winfrey; but he only got one letter back (for $100) from a news anchor. He also looked for donations from anywhere he could get them including Westside Elementary School (where his mom worked). He also lived very cheaply to save money for the school. He sold his car, and everything he owned. While observing Mortenson's actions, I can deduce that he is extremely unselfish.

  30. Greg does many different things in this chapter that show the kind of person he is. 1st off,he is very determined. Without his determination, the schools and all the programs he has started would not exist today. Also, he lived up to his promise to build a school for the children of Korphe. He is also a very kind and giving person for sacrificing nearly everything he had to help that village.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I also think that Greg Mortenson is very dedicated to his goal. He typed all those letters and asked for donations, but only received one response. He also sold everything he owned to help the children of Korphe. Lastly, Greg worked tirelessly to get all the supplies and himself back safely to Korphe. The one word that sums up Greg Mortenson is determined.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Determined- He typed around 580 letters to famous and rich people asking for funds to pay for the materials needed, he sold everything that he had owned for the money, when other villages tried to persuade him to build in their villages he stayed with his promise to help the people of Korphe.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I agree with Jay Kepes because he was right there was only one word to describe Greg DETERMINED. Just what Jay said that Greg sold all of his personal belonging to help the people of Korphe

    ReplyDelete
  34. I agree with what Melissa had to say, but he was also loyal. He worked on getting the money for the school and Korphe that he promised to the elder in the village. Even at the cost of his car, home, and of house items.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Greg Morenson has a rare character, in my opinion. After meeting the people of Korphe his true character would be shown.

He worked very hard to raise the money he needed for the school. This shows he never gives up even if things gets bad. Writing 580 letters on an old type writer and always having to start over because of the small keys. Selling everything he owned from his house to his climing gear. Also living as cheaply as possible in order to save money.

To me this shows he cares more about others than himself.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Mortenson's actions and thoughts show that Mortenson is unselfish. When Mortenson was in school, his father became sick with cancer. Mortenson suggested that he quit school and come home to take care of his father. His father, however, told him not to and to remain in school so, instead, he would come home every other weekend and help his father. Another way Mortenson was unselfish was when he was raising money for the school. He sold all of his things and lived on the basic necessities. The third way he showed he was unselfish is when he was disgusted by the fact that some of the villages were so greedy that they were trying to persuade him to build the school there, when what he really wanted was to build the school for the people who helped him and had been so kind to him the last time he was there.

    ReplyDelete
  37. One word to describe Greg Mortenson would be hard to find, yet one that described his character would have to be determined as Jay said. For no-one who sells their car and practically everything they own for cause could be called anything but determined (well I guess they could be, but that's not the point). Also, a further compliment to his determination would have to be the fact that he typed out 580 letters to various popular or rich people. So, I think this is perfect justification to my reasoning in saying that he is determined.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I agree with Tara on this question completely. Greg did indeed show how dedicated he was to helping the kids of Korphe by typing his letters for donations, selling his own property for money, and finally, buying the supplies. I also agree with Jaime because if he was not as loyal, committed, or devoted to his promise than why else would he take the time to write 580 letters on a type writer asking for money for his school.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Mortenson was very committed to building the school for the children in Korphe. Even though Greg Mortenson had to sell all of his stuff, like his car, books, and other valuable things that have been in his family for centuries. Other villages tried to persuade him into building the school for their children, and Mortenson stayed to his promise with the leader of Korphe. I would describe Greg Mortenson as very giving.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I very much agree with Erica, Greg Mortenson is very dedicated. For Mortenson to give up his car, and most of his belongings and to risk his life on a car ride to get the supplies to Korphe shows his dedication. He risked his life, gave up everything he owned, wrote 580 letters to raise money, and argued with people for supplies, I would say he is very dedicated to the promise he made to the people in Korphe to build them a school.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Greg spent all the money he had, and sold pretty much all of his belongings. He also sent 580 letters to celebrities, but only received 1 letter back from a news anchor with a check for $100. I believe that he is generous because he gave up all he had to benefit the school he was set out to build in Korphe.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Three of Greg Mortenson's actions that reveal his character are when he sold everything he had to raise money to build a school in Korphe. Also when he went back to America to raise more money to build a bride going across a river bed to Korphe. The third way that Greg's action reveal his character are when he wrote 580 letters to celebrities asking them to help the people in Korphe. I would also say that I agree totally with Byrant, Tara, and Jaime when they said that Greg was determined to raise money and help the people of Korphe have a better life. One word that sums up what Greg Mortenson is would have to be unselfish.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Greg Mortenson did many things to help the people of Korphe. One way is he took the time to write 580 letters for donations, and even though he only got a check of $100, he never gave up. Greg sold most of his important belongings like his car, for the people of Korphe. Another action Greg did was risking his life by traveling on challenging roads, were he could have easily slipped off the edge. All and many more actions that Greg did all describe his character as devoted, like many others have said. I say this because he put all the people from the small, poor village of Korphe infront of him and never broke his promise.

  49. I agree with Michael when he talks about Greg being very un selfish. In the book it says that Greg used a hand typewriter to type letters, one by one, to 580 different people. Also, as Michael said, he sold everything. He even sold his climbing gear. The reminder of his attempt at climbing K2. After he sold most of his things he sold his apartment to conserve his money. He then lived in his car for a very long time. This shows that Greg is dedicated and determined to reach his goal.

  50. I think Greg was really devoted to building schools for the children in Pakistanian. He sold everything he owned so he school do this. He wrote 580 letters. And only recived one donation of 100$.I agree with Erin becuase he said he would build a school for girls in Korphe and stuck to it.

  51. I think Greg is a giver. I think you could only really categorize some people as that. In being that he puts everyone else before him self. He would leave his wife, he would send 580 letters, he would spend time bargaining for supplies he sold the belongings that meant the most to him for them. He took the time for people he was still getting to know just so that they could have an education.I also agree that Greg is determined because he will do anything to see that this school will go through in being built.

  53. I agree with Izzy on this question, Greg showed determination and dedication in this chapter. Greg recieved a $100 donation and never gave up, he wrote 580 letters to see if he could get any more donation and he also sold some of his belongings to raise more money for the Korphe school.

  56. There are many important actions that took place in this book. For example one action was when he hand typed 580 letters to the rich and famous. Secondly Greg took a very unselfish act and sold everything that he had to donate to the CAI. Lastly,he showed devotion to building the Korphe school and having the determination to want to climb the second biggest mountain in the world K2. I think that the word devotion discribes Greg Mortenson very well.

Second, he was very loyal to the people of Korphe when he promised them he would build a school for them. Third, he sold most of his belongings and slept in his car to get and save money for materials for the school. An adjective to describe Greg Mortenson might be dedicated, or determined.

He is loyal because he made a promise to Korphe that he would build them a school after he raised enough money. Mortensen is also determined because he typed out 580 letters to people including celebrities on a type writer, until someone showed him how you can type it once on the computer and still get 580 copies. 67. I agree with Cassandra G. Selling almost everything he owned was a big risk. He slept in his car because of that. Also after typing all of those letters on a type writer must have been really hard and his hands must have hurt when he was done. Also he never gave up raising money for the children to help them build the schools. You can tell by reading this story that Greg is an outgoing person and he never gave up!!!!!

  68. One word that sums up Greg’s actions is Determined. Greg tried to raise money by typing out letters to rich and/or famous people, he typed 580 letters on a typewriter but then his typewriter broke so he wrote them on a computer instead. He ended up only getting one letter back with a check for $100. Even though he didn't get much, he did not give up when his mother a principal at Westside Elementary School in Wisconsin asked him to talk to the kids about what he was trying to do for the children of Korphe. It turned out that the children understood perfectly and got out all their pennies and they ended up collecting 62,345 pennies for the school in Korphe. When he was still short of what he needed to build the school he sold many of his belongings determined not to give up on the children of Korphe. He sold a lot of what he owned and he kept everything he owned in a small storage space, stopped renting his apartment and slept in his car. Greg was so determined to build the school for the children of Korphe, that he was willing to give up everything he owned to help them.

  69. I think three reconizable actions that Greg took to build the school was, one, he made a promise to build a school and intended to keep it. Two, he wrote 580 letters to famous people, rich people and organizations to riase enough money to keep his promise to Hji Ali. Three, when he didn't make enough money to build the school, he sold everything that he had including his home and lived in his car to make enough money. This shows me that the school and people of Korphe were so important to him, he treated them like his everything.
If I had one word to describe Greg Mortensen, it would be devoted. I would use this word to describe him because he was willing to do anything to build a school and to make life easier for the people of Korphe. He new these people needed extra help and he took matters into his own hands and took what ever measures he needed to, to get what he wanted for his "family".

  72. Greg was the most unselfish guy i have ever heard of. He risked his life to honor his sister in climbing K2. He also gave up his life at home to visit the children that he built the schools for. He even left his wife, and daughter at home in America just to make sure all of the schools the CAI built were well kept and had all the supplys they needed. He also set up more school while he was there. I belive that that is a very unselfish act.
